Fifteen habits you need to do away with in 2017

1) Overspending and overborrowing.

2017 is a brand new year. Have a look at your spending habits and stop frivolities. Start saving. Borrowing is an enemy of saving.

It is possible not to borrow money at all but if you must, then at least borrow less. Stop borrowing when you have no way of paying back. Stop spending money you don’t have.

2) Anger and uncontrollable temper

Anger may have gotten the better of us in 2016, but absolutely not in 2017. The Holy Spirit can help overcome anger. You can also read up practical tips on subduing anger and avoiding provocation. As hard as it can be, anger can be controlled.

Watch your temper in 2017. You don’t want to be known as the bad-tempered lady or guy or the person who can’t control their emotions.

3) Procrastination.

This habit of postponing till tomorrow what should be done today is one that all of us (including  me) should steer clear of in 2017.

4) Fear.

Fear will hold us back and drag us down. It’s like a big stone. It will give us reasons not to soar and suggest all the bad stuff that can happen. I intend to defriend fear in 2017. Pls do so too.

5) Laxity.

This can be physical or spiritual, and in my opinion, spiritual laxity is worse. Beloved, be spiritually alert in 2017. Satan is on the prowl and his agents are everywhere. The Bible tell us in 1st Peter 5:8 to be sober and vigilant because our adversary the devil is going about like a roaring Lion, seeking for whom to devour.

Doesn’t that give you chills? The Devil isn’t resting, we mustn’t also. Don’t take anything for granted.

6) Toxic Relationships.

Anybody who makes you feel less in any way should not be a part of your life in 2017. If they are family and can’t be totally avoided, then limit your interaction . Stop giving them permission to make you feel bad.

7) Not having a relationship with God

It’s time to stop talking to God once in a while. He isn’t far at all. It’s time to spend quality time with him. Get a devotional, read your Bible as much as possible, spend time in worship and praises. Try to fast as often as you can.

8) Sexual sins.

My people, any form of sex outside the confines of marriage, watching pornography, masturbation etc are all sins. But the good thing is that they can be overcome. I am serious. If you aren’t married, you can abstain with the Holy Spirit’s help. And before you know it your body count in 2017 will be zero. Yay!

9) Bad food habits.

I am also hoping to work on this in 2017. Sweet stuff and soda are my vices. What’s yours?

Even if you are ‘Lepa'(thin), it’s possible to be unhealthy.  Let’s endeavor to eat more healthily in 2017.

10) Caustic Tongue.

If your words cut like razor in 2016, let them be seasoned with salt in 2017 abeg. Your words should uplift, comfort and encourage people. I know that you may not intend to make others feel bad with your words, but if one or two people have complained or made observations, then you need to change.

11) Low self-esteem /putting yourself down.

Enough of thinking you aren’t good enough. You are created in God’s image. You are Beautiful, you are Perfect. People will not treat you better than you treat yourself, they look to you to know how to treat you. So when you take rubbish, regard yourself as rubbish, they do the same because you gave permission.

ENOUGH!  2017 is a new year.

12) Idolatry .

No! I don’t mean the ones in the village. Hahaha. I mean the ones in our hearts. That thing you value more than God is an idol. That thing you want more than God is an idol. The thing you neglect God for is an idol. God hates idols. Look through your life and begin to destroy those idols. A spouse, child, job can be an idol. Something as simple as a desire to marry can be an idol (if it’s all you think about, pray about, plan towards and talk about to the detriment of your relationship with God) and even i had to work on it.

13) Discouragement/Depression.

These are Satan’s tools to stop us from dreaming and to cut our testimonies short.

Discouragement is one of the devil’s main tools. Once he can discourage you, fear sets in, you start questioning God, murmuring and you pray less . One great way to fight discouragement and depression is to prepare for it. Have your answers and the Word of God ready. If you don’t prepare, you can be caught unawares and get overwhelmed.

14) Dreaming small or not dreaming at all.

Dream big until you can’t dream again which means keep dreaming. Stop setting bars for God. Did he tell you that there were any limits? Dream and scare yourself at your audacity. Dream and scare Satan and his agents at your audacity. Dream beyond the present, dream out. There’s literally nothing that can stop you when your time comes. Don’t be afraid to dream.

15) Bonus bad habits are overtalking, oversharing and chattering, social media addiction, putting others down, pride etc.

Waoh!  We have come to the end. Lol. Thank God.

I hope you found one or two Bad habits to drop. I definitely found more than one. Okay, more than four. Lol. I  am not admitting to more than that.  Feel free to add more in the comments.

Talk about food for thought. The idolatory, fear leading to dreaming small, depression and discouragement are real things I need to do away with in this season. Personally, another thing I want to do away with is my lackadasical attitude towards my job because I am not passionate about it and I know it’s only a stepping stone. I need to remind myself that there are people who would give anything to have this job now and also that if I’m not faithful in the small things, how will God then trust me for bigger things? So that is something I will work on while I’m still at this position. Bisi, I can’t thank you enough for your blog. It’s amazing how you are able to articulate a lot of things I think about. You are really making an impact and inspiring people. God bless you.

Lol. Most of the above are common habits.we all know they aren’t good but they can be hard to get rid off without the help of God, determination and discipline. You aren’t alone, Me sef I get my own for top there. Admitting it is the first step.
You know jobs are a funny thing, sometimes you want one badly and then you get it and you want something else or you realize you will be better at something else. lol. In the mean time, Nothing stops you from giving this job your best while actively praying and looking out for another one, every step in life has a reason for that point in time.
Make final decisions depending on what seems best and what the Holy Spirit is saying.. Be sure to look up to God for guidance. I have left a job because i was certain God wanted me to leave. Nervous but certain.
Thank you so much for your words. The stuff I write about are stuff I go through or I have gone through which is why I talk about them. Inspiration and impact is the work of the Holy Spirit.

    Awesome points, dear.
I hate borrowing with a passion. Scripture says a borrower is a slave to the lender. So true. Borrowing is a form of slavery.
Spiritual laxity is very dangerous. Lukewarmness just doesn’t work. May God help us to be zealous enough this year.
